Our impressions and key takeaways from MIPIM 2023

Last week, our Head of Business Development, Bertrand Labalette, and Technical Director, Ricardo M. Paternina Soberón, attended MIPIMWorld 2023 in Cannes. Bertrand Labalette made some insightful observations during the event.

The current state of the 2023 market is showing signs of complexity and fragility in multiple areas. However, this year brings forth a sense of excitement as past challenges are transforming into new opportunities. The era of constructing large-scale buildings is closing, prompting a reevaluation of existing assets. This includes refurbishing buildings, redeveloping abandoned industrial sites, densification and transforming offices into residential spaces. As architects, we must remain aware of what resources are available to us and what limitations we may face.

90% of what will make up the future city exists today. Therefore, to successfully transition towards a low-carbon society, it is crucial that we integrate this reasonable approach and focus on what we have already. For instance, this is what we have done recently in Dublin by converting an 80s office building into a spacious, mixed-use complex that seamlessly integrates with the cityscape while saving resources!

The shift towards sustainability is a revolution that should have commenced long ago, not at present, nor ten years down the line. Participating in events such as MIPIMWorld serves as a reminder that, as architects, we have a vital role to play, no matter how small our contribution may be, in driving the agenda forward. It is our responsibility to take ownership and do our part in this much larger movement.

As an international studio, it is crucial for ARROW Architects to be present at MIPIMWorld Being there gives us better visibility and offers real opportunities to meet with our friends: clients, architectural studios, and partners we like to work with. We had a lot of great meetings; some official, some very informal!

MIPIMWorld provides an excellent opportunity for architects to better understand their role in shaping the built environment. By attending events such as these, we are exposed to new perspectives and innovative approaches that broaden our knowledge. Moreover, it serves as a reminder that even in a world driven by numbers, architecture has the power to evoke emotions and bring joy and hope to people's lives.

The Future is bright. Let's start today with building tomorrow together!
