In many timber buildings, the beauty of the wood remains concealed. However, we aimed to showcase it while also safeguarding it from the elements, allowing it to remain untreated and maintenance-free.
Our vision for the new building is to improve the city block by connecting the new and old structures through an inner courtyard that provides greenery and enhances the quality of both the existing buildings and the pine project.
The Pine building is meticulously designed to optimize the dimensions of the Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) elements, striking the most efficient balance between wood mass and economic viability.
To mitigate carbon emissions, we're implementing various strategies, including on-site renewable energy generation and off-site renewable energy sourcing. Through simulations and harnessing the timber's inherent capabilities, we've eliminated all facade insulation, experiencing only a minimal temperature fluctuation of 0.5°C compared to traditional construction methods.
The east side of the plot is dedicated to a forest zone, featuring a small hill covered in pine trees and natural stone. As one approaches the entrance of the building, the greenery becomes less dense and a view of the atrium is revealed.
The landscape design must address space, biodiversity, and water management. Along the slope of the inner roads, the landscape features evoke a historic "river bank," with wave-like patterns in the pavement. This design not only adds visual interest but also creates a safe and tranquil pedestrian space by diverting main vehicular traffic.
